I understand. You found paradise in America, you had a good trade, you made a good living. The police protected you and there were courts of law. You didn’t need a friend like me. I remember 9th maybe 10th grade, when we read Watership Down for class. I read the book and did the work and got good grades all the way up to the part where all the rabbits decide they need to negotiate their way into getting some female rabbits for the warren.
For some reason I thought Hazel was a girl up till that part, just glossed over all the pronouns somehow, idk, and I figured the gender split was just because it was written by some old dude who thinks the world is split 75/25 male/female.
But no.
I kinda checked out for the rest of the book and skated along in class on sparknotes. I dont remember if there was ever actual words said by a female rabbit, or if they got any say in whether or not they went to the new warren. I remember they were referred to as dams. And the rabbits wanted at least 10 dams for a stable colony, maybe 15.
And nobody said anything about it being wierd. The worksheets we filled out just ran with the nomenclature and no one talked about how the male rabbits are treated as people in the narrative and the female rabbits are treated as animals. The teacher never mentioned anything or even made a passing comment about different times.
I didn’t say anything, because we were almost done with this stupid book about rabbits and no one wanted to talk about it anymore.
I remember watching an owl snag a hare out of the backyard while I was conspicuously Not Reading my book, and thinking about the prince with a thousand enemies. And then about his dam, who has a thousand and one.
They’re called DOES not “dams”???

This is…. the worst fucking take. Like holy shit, I thought I was critical of Adams’ lack of gender representation in the first book (especially given that the story was written for his daughters), but this is plain unfair.
